Henry sportswriter Grantland Rice was that was at the Centre in the heart of the golden age of sports, heroically to write about the achievements of the new American Gods: Bobby Jones, Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Bill Tilden and Red Grange.With language that sometimes approached poetry, he deliberately turned them into objects of worship of The famous Hero. Notre Dame backfield, he wrote:
Outlined against a sky blue-gray October that The Four Horsemen rode again.In dramatic lore, they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death.These are just aliases. their real names are: Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden. they formed the crest of the cyclone South Bend before another Army combat team was swept the precipice in Polo fields this afternoon as 55000 viewers looked down on the confusing panorama spread out over the Green course below.
There is also this famous piece:
When the bookmark Great One comes to write your name
He brands – not that you won or lost-but how you played the game
And Bobby Jones, Rice said: “One can also try to describe the smoothness of the wind to paint a clear picture of your full swing”.
Rice was also a fair hand with poetry, and so I thought his play “The Answer” it may be appropriate as game day inspiration for football Ryder teams:
The answer
Grantland Rice
When the battle against themselves and break crowd forgets to twist,
When the Anvil chorus echoes with the essence of a jeer.
When the hot start your panoramic knocker in an agile,
With a hit for all their mistakes and a josh to your game.
There is a rapid response ready that will nail them on asa;
There is a short answer that will wipe away the sting;
There is an elastic come-back that will keep them, as it should,
Do good.
No matter where you end the confusion or the line,
There are those among the scum that will move you in any way;
But the input that is boring and delivering the material,
You can hear the yapping as he giggles until his fist.
The loafer doesn’t have not come-back and no response, the quitter
When the Anvil chorus echoes, as he will, from the sky;
But there is a rapid response ready that will put them in a skin,
Do good.
